Pictured is my grandmother, Ruth Beitzel, working at the information desk at CMOA in 1980. My grandmother was also an artist, a painter, who attended Carnegie Tech (as it was called at the time). She often said that working at the museum was one of the happiest times in her life.
I am a writer and journalist from Western Pennsylvania. I've written essays, many about class and culture, for Guernica, Oxford American, and The Rumpus, and my reporting has appeared in the Atlantic, Esquire, Forbes, and Spin.
